KAMA (SEX)

KAMA ( SEX) –

Kama does not only mean sex.. it means desire.. how the sexual life shoud be is well described in many Hindu scriptures predominantly in the Smritis and Puranas..

The word sex comes from the Latin word sexus and the French word sexe:

  • Latin sexus: The word sexus is thought to be related to the Latin word secāre, which means “to divide”. The word sexus can mean “gender, gender traits, males or females, genitals”.
  • French sexe: The French word sexe can mean “genitals; gender”.

The word sex was first recorded in the Middle English period (1150—1500). The earliest known use of the word sex is in the Bible (Wycliffite, early version) before 1382.

Ayurveda has 8thbranch called Vajeekarana which deals with Improving sexual potency and efficacy of progeny.

VAJIKARAN-Vaji, which means horse, and Karna, which means to make potent.

VAJIKARAN. In Sanskrit, the symbol of sexual potency and performance thus Vajikaran means producing a horse’s vigor, particularly the animal’s great capacity for sexual activity in the individual. Literally the Vajikaran is not exactly aphrodisiac but the current connotation meaning is same.

By proper use of these formulations, one becomes endowed

with good physique, potency, strength, complexion and

sexually exhilarated and potent like an 8‑year‑old horse

The man who seeks pleasure should resort to Vajikaran,

i.e., vilification therapy regularly. The Vajikaran bestows

contentment, nourishment, continuity of progeny and great

happiness. The medicines or therapy by which the man

becomes capable of sexual intercourse with the woman with

great strength like a horse, which endears him to women

and which nourishes the body of the person is known as

Vajikaran. It is best promoter of strength and vigor.

the ability to perform sex and having a strong sexual appetite are signs of good health, according to Ayurveda. Sex promotes good health as well as longevity.

In Ayurveda, sexual health is deeply connected to the balance of the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and is considered a vital aspect of overall well-being, with a specific focus on “Ojas” (the essence of vitality), where proper sexual practices are seen as a way to nourish and maintain this energy; the practice of enhancing sexual health is called “Vajikarana” in Ayurveda, which aims to promote sexual potency and vigor through dietary and herbal remedies tailored to individual dosha imbalances.

Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a healthy mind-body connection for optimal sexual health, including practices like yoga, meditation, and pranayama.

Dosha balance:

A balanced Vata promotes healthy libido and arousal, Pitta governs sexual passion and stamina, while Kapha supports endurance and lubrication; imbalances in any of these can lead to sexual dysfunction

Across time, culture, and history, humans have engaged in sex. But most of us are told and are veiled that sex is only for reproductive purposes. But Ayurveda doesn’t limit sex for just breeding. One of the three pillars of Ayurveda is sex. Sex can nourish us profoundly and should be indulged from time to time. But there are rules to this.

Everything, according to Ayurveda, has a relation with the three elements. Sex is one of the factors of air elements vatadosha. If the movement of this vata is healthy, it keeps us balanced and the rhythms of nature.

  • Importance of ‘ojas’
  • Ojas refers to one’s vitality and energy. Its primary function is vyadhikshamatva, which is the body’s capacity to fight against disease and strengthen immunity. That said, according to Ayurveda, sex and our sexual behaviour deeply influences our immune system and the flow of vital energy.

Traditionally it is believed that sex is a way to achieve reproduction. But Ayurveda does not support this belief of restricting sex to reproduction. As per ayurvedic philosophy, sex nourishes us deeply, and it should happen from time to time.

Sexual urge is a natural instinct and Ayurveda doesn’t restrict sex to reproduction only, rather it is thought as an activity that can nourish us deeply and in which we should indulge from time to time. Ancient India has had open conversations about all aspects of sex. The last chapters in the Kamasutra, India’s most famous handbook of love, is all about different ways you can enhance your sexual pleasure. Ayurveda has a branch called Vajeekarana which deals with Improving sexual potency and efficacy of progeny.

The framework of Ayurveda is wide enough to include all that is very essential to make the humans healthy and happy. Balanced Sex is considered one of the three aspects of life which maintain health, along with a balanced diet and sleep.

According to Ayurveda, disciplined sexual intercourse helps to balance the body’s fundamental principles and the role it plays in maintaining the mental level is of greater significance.

“Did you know an active sex life can help you…

  • Reduce risk of heart disease
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Ease chronic pain
  • Lower risk for prostate cancer
  • Improve sleep
  • And more”

With that in mind…

According to WHO, sexual wellbeing comprises factors like having a good understanding of sex, engaging in consensual and positive relationships with your partner, and enjoying the sex you are having.

Hindu scriptures one finds different types of sexual activity that can easily be classified

Dharma sex – the purpose of sexual activity is only procreation. There is no love here, no desire, and no attachment, just duty

Kama sex –the purpose is pleasure, nothing else. Here the focus is to indulge the senses and excite the mind and achieve orgasm. Homosexuality falls in this category as it has no procreative purpose.

Artha sex –Sex is a transaction. Sex is used as a service offered in exchange for material favours.

Moksha sex –where sex is seen as a technique to break free from the unending cycle of birth and death. This idea is prevalent in Tantrik texts where sex is not about pleasure or procreation or commercial transaction; it is about gaining magical powers known as siddhi that enables one to control nature.
